Minerva Marine Inc. & Together for Children: Supporting education in Kalymnos through impactful initiatives

Together for Children upgraded and enriched 11 schools in Kalymnos with the generous support of Minerva Marine Inc. The interventions are part of the Remote Areas Program, benefiting a total of 1,546 students and 217 teachers in Kalymnos island.

Specifically, TfC created three STEM classrooms and three creative activity classrooms, upgraded two kindergartens, and established and enriched school libraries and reading corners. At the same time, four schools were equipped with robotics kits, two vocational training labs were reinforced, a Reception Class for non-Greek Students was established, and a computer lab was upgraded. Additionally, 18 classrooms were equipped with interactive white-boards and projectors, bringing students closer to a modern educational experience.

Interventions:

Primary Education:

  • At the 3rd Primary School of Kalymnos, a STEM classroom and a Creative Learning & Play Room were created, equipped with educational materials, games for all ages, knowledge and literature books, as well as sports equipment. The goal of the intervention is to give the school’s 160 students the opportunity to engage with modern sciences and a variety of learning subjects.
  • At the 1st Primary School of Chora, Kalymnos, with 149 students, a Library and Creative Learning Room was created, offering children a space for learning, collaboration, and the cultivation of a love for reading.
  • At the 2nd Primary School of Kalymnos Town, with 182 students, robotics kits, laptops, and interactive screens were provided.
  • At the Primary School of Panormos, with 121 students, the Reception Class for non-Greek students was equipped to facilitate the smooth integration of students whose native language is not Greek, while 218 book titles were also provided.
  • At the Primary School of Argos, Kalymnos, with 26 students, interventions were implemented to substantially enhance the educational experience. The computer and robotics lab was equipped with modern tools, enabling students to become familiar with technology and educational robotics. In addition, a STEM Library was created to help children explore science, mathematics, and engineering, and the Lending Library was further enriched. Finally, a Reading Corner was designed to inspire students’ love for books and reading.
  • At the 2nd Kindergarten of Chora, Kalymnos, the educational material was modernized and enriched with new books, teaching aids, and resources that promote fine motor skills and sensory integration for its 20 pupils.
  • At the 2nd Kindergarten of Kalymnos Town, with 48 students, furniture, an interactive white-board, indoor and outdoor play equipment, STEM educational material, sensory integration and fine motor development tools, as well as sports equipment were provided.

Secondary Education Schools:

  • At the 1st Vocational High School (EPAL) of Kalymnos — the largest school on the island in terms of student population and one of the largest in the Dodecanese — the Electrical Engineering and Merchant Marine Engineering Laboratories were upgraded with new equipment. Additionally, projectors were provided for five classrooms, meeting the needs of the school’s 317 students, as well as those of the co-located schools (Evening EPAL and IEK Kalymnos).
  • The 1st Junior High School of Kalymnos – Nikiforeio was equipped with new electronic and laboratory materials for the Science Lab, serving the needs of 240 students.
  • The 3rd Junior High School, with 174 students, was strengthened with laptops and educational robotics kits.
  • At the 2nd General High School of Kalymnos, attended by 109 students, sports and creative activity materials were provided, enhancing both physical education and students’ creative engagement.

The above interventions are part of the broader program implemented by Minerva Marine Inc. in Kalymnos, aiming to improve the quality of life for the island’s residents.
